When Gander first experienced those who “come from away”, it was in response to the chaos in the skies caused by the 9/11 disaster. America shut down its airspace, and 37 aircraft were diverted to Gander International Airport. 7000 people arrived on the doorstep of this small Newfoundland town populated with 10,000 inhabitants.
